I can smell mini donuts and elephant ears deep frying already! Stampede kicks off today, and as a stampede veteran, I put together a list of five style essentials for a modern take on celebrating Calgary's western heritage.

1 I  The Western Style Ankle Boot - This style of boot has been a wardrobe staple for the past several seasons. Moving away from a traditional cowboy boot, these ankle height booties with a wood stacked heel are comfortable for walking on pavement and dancing the night away. Click here for a similar style.

2 I  The Cut-Off Short - Denim cut offs are a staple every summer. They are easy to style with several colours and complete the perfect casual "thrown together" look for summer. A mid - high rise allows for tops to be tucked in for a more flattering silhouette. A light or medium denim wash is popular this season, and works great with black/white/grey to take a break from the cliche western plaid shirt. Click here for similar distressed denim cutoffs.

3 I  The Bolo Tie - Modern style Bolo ties are huge right now. The fusion of a choker and traditional Bolo Tie adds a contemporary touch to any look. Bolos are great because you can wrap and style them several different ways to change things up. Showcase your Bolo tie with an off the shoulder top or other open necklines. Click here for a cool Bolo choker by a local (Calgary, Canada) designer.

4 I  The Off the Shoulder Top - The Stampede grounds can get pretty hot, standing on concrete all day. An off the shoulder top is perfect for hanging out at the beer tents and the exploring grounds in style. A material that breathes is key. Cotton, lace or a perforated material is stylish and practical. Check out a similar top here

5 I  The Saddle Bag - A cross body bag is key for Stampede. Ride lovers need to have a  small, secure bag to be able to take it on most rides. Beer drinkers and foodies need to be able to fully indulge, without a handbag getting in the way.
The curved, feminine shape Saddle Bag has taken over the past couple of seasons, and many more to come.  The western flare with a modern vibe is both beautiful and practical. Click here for a similar Saddle bag.
